06 June 2006 Tuesday

We headed out this morning for our jaunt around Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico.  We were up late last night visiting with Jay and Claudia, so we’re moving kind of slow.  We got the truck packed up, locked up the house and took off.

We drove to Grand Junction, CO and stopped at a United Country realty office and got some info on the towns in the surrounding area.  We headed out through lots of small towns.   We went thru Delta, CO, but didn’t get a good feel for the town, kind of small and run down.  We continued thru Hotchkiss, a very cute town, but we didn’t stop.

We went on to Paonia, CO.  We got to Paonia in time for dinner.  As we drove thru town, we found 4 places open.  One place, a deli, was completely empty.  We considered that a reflection of the food.  Another place, the Flying Fork, seemed popular, but the prices were a little higher than what we liked.  The other 2 places were both pizza places.  Pizza to the Limit was kind of run down looking, so we chose Pizza My Heart.  They had a good beer selection, but the service and the kitchen were very slow.  They were really packed for a Tuesday night and our waiter said pizza was taking an hour to come out of the kitchen.  Well, we ordered sandwiches and they also took a long time to come out.  We finally got our food and it was really good, but it took us two hours for dinner!

It was way past dark by the time we started looking for our camp spot for the night.  Many of the roads lead to private land and houses.  We went over Kleber Pass towards Gunnison National Forest,  We found a dirt road, but there was no place to pull off, lots of farms and houses along the road.  We went up another and another with the same results.  We finally found a dirt road along a rushing stream with a steep hill on the other side.  As we went up this road, we didn’t find any camping, but the road was getting more narrow and rocky the further we went.  We had a mountain on one side and a steep bank to the river on the other side.  It was almost 11pm and we were still looking, getting tired and frustrated.  Without any place to turn around, Andrew had to back down maybe a quarter of a mile of narrow, rocky dirt road until we found a spot wide enough to turn around.  We decided that this wide spot was good enough for a camp tonight, even though it leaned quite a bit.

05 June 2006 Monday

We hated it, but Gautam and Donna had to leave this morning to catch their flight out of Denver.  Andrew and I have some errands to take care of before we leave.  We’re taking off for 9 or 10 days and looking at parts of Colorado and New Mexico that we might want to build on.  Our trip to the Northwest is still on the schedule, but we love Colorado and would love to make things work here, if we can find something that will work for us.

Neighbors from across the street, Jay and Claudia, came over tonight after dinner and we chatted over a few drinks.  They have traveled quite a bit and are currently caretakers of the house across the street.  They are really nice folks, we compared camper and traveling stories most of the evening.

04 June 2006 Sunday

Another beautiful day in Colorado.  We took a local hike to Stag Gulch trail in the White River National Forest, up the road from the house.  The yellow daisies that Andrew and I had seen a few days ago were still not fully blooming, but Gautam and Donna enjoyed the alpine meadow and sunshine.   We went into Avon to a bakery/deli for lunch, came back to the house and napped most of the afternoon.  Happy Hour on the back deck and dinner at home.  It’s really good to see old friends again.

03 June 2006 Saturday

A lazy morning catching up with good friends.  We drove thru beautiful Glenwood Canyon and on to Aspen, CO.  Donna is a huge John Denver fan and we had to stop at the John Denver Sanctuary Park in Aspen.  We went up to the Maroon Bells, an exquisite set of mountain peaks nearby, and took a short 2 mile hike.  We drove back to Edwards and had kind of a late dinner at the house.

02 June 2006 Friday

We cleaned up the house and waited for Gautam and Donna to arrive.  The got to the house in time for Happy Hour.  We chilled out and chatted for a while.  It was great seeing them again!  We then went into Edwards to the Gore Range Brewery for dinner.

Southern Nevada

After spending a few weeks in the desert, it was time for some civilization.  It was time to head for Vegas baby!  Las Vegas is an absolutely fascinating city. On one hand, it is the pinnacle of American culture.  It has everything, in excess, from great restaurants (buffets of course), great shows, and world-class gambling. On the other hand, it is a city running on borrowed time with regards to water.  Eventually, the city will run out of water according to this BBC article.  I suspected, and this article confirms, this has more to do with people who think that green lawns and golf courses belong in the desert than the oppulent casinos.

Partly in jest, I tried to snag a $30 budget hotel room on the strip via Priceline.com for the weekend so we could enjoy Vegas without worrying about camping nearby.  The computer laughed me right off of the internet and onto my phone where I gave my mom a buzz.  She reminded me that we had second cousins, Joyce and George, in Las Vegas (whom we had seen recently at cousin Rachel and Ricardo’s wedding, as mentioned here).  As we were driving into Red Rocks Conservation Area (about 30 minutes from Las Vegas), I gave my second cousin a call.  We had just barely entered the visitor’s center when we got a call back from them graciously offering to host us.  We are so fortunate to have a great family!  Joyce and George were wonderful hosts.  Just as we loved having company in Atlanta, Joyce and George loved having us at their home.  It was really great to get to know them better.  They are a very socially active retired couple, playing cards, bowling or golfing with friends almost every day.  We only hope our retirement is as socially active as theirs!

Teresa and I might seem like an odd couple to some folks.  We are completely at ease in the wilderness, peeing in the woods and comfortable with the howl of coyotes, but yet we make the transition to the city quite easily.  As such, Teresa and I had an absolute blast in Las Vegas.  We soaked up the energy of Las Vegas like a sponge.  We caught just about every free show on the strip and walked for miles through the surreal  Venetian, and Paris, admired the Chihuly glasswork in the Bellagio, and stared googly eyed at the  Fremont Street megatron.  We splurged a few times, dining out and spending $150 on a superb pair of front and center tickets to a show named “Avenue Q“.  It’s basically an R-rated Sesame Street musical.  It would have been X-rated, except Muppets don’t have genitalia.  It was entertaining, funny, and intelligent with a great message.  My face hurt from smiling and laughing so much.  Of course, we had to do a bit of gambling.  Spending $1.00 on slots, I cashed out with $2.65.  Hah!  Take that Bellagio!  Teresa, on the other hand, lost about $6.00 on slots, so “they” made it back.  Not surprisingly, our schedule went haywire.  Teresa and I are used to going to sleep just after dark (9pm or so) and waking at sunrise.  In Las Vegas, we got back to the house at 1 or 2 am a few times and still woke up at daybreak.  Although we did drive back out to Red Rocks during our stay for a little break from the city, we left Joyce and George’s place totally exhausted and ready for some more wilderness time… ready to hear some more coyote howls.

But our next stop was another wonder of the world and an engineering feat of its time: the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead.  Between vehicle checks by Homeland Security and road construction, traffic was reduced to one lane.  There was a line of 50 cars or more, and of course, we got stopped due to our “threatening load” up top.

After a night in the desert camped in Lake Mead, we headed into Valley of Fire State Park.  I guarantee you have seen Valley Of Fire, even if you don’t recognized the name.  It has been in hundreds of TV commercials and looks something like this:

We actually saw the movie Redline being filmed in the park.  Unbeknownst to us, they were filming a controversial scene in the movie involving the destruction of a rare $450,000 Porsche Carrera GT.  It is said that Porsche is suing the movie makers stating that destroying the Carrera GT would hinder their ability to market it.  Huh?  Of course, this is just an internet rumor, and my google searches turned up nothing more than internet chatter, so who knows?  It makes for a great story though!

Note: Teresa and I are currently relaxing for a bit at Villa Koransky in Edwards, CO.  We are trying to keep up with the main blog and videos, but are finding out that we do not have enough time.  Perhaps we are just burning out?  We’ll do our best to finish the main blog entries, and we do eventually plan on working on the videos, but we find ourselves running out of time.  Strange for a year off, no?  We may get to them once we finish travelling for a bit, resulting in a podcast fest towards the end of the year!

Stay tuned for the next segment of our adventure in a Utah blog update.  Be sure to check Teresa’s Daily Diary which is being kept more up to date than anything else.  There are also tons of new photos posted.  Like this one:

Look!  Someone actually took a hummer off road!

01 June 2006 Thursday

We worked on the computer most of the day.  We went up to Cordillera Market to take advantage of their high-speed internet connection. We uploaded lots of photos that I’d been preparing for the last several days. Andrew has been working on putting Google ads on our website. These ads scan the web page and put up ads that are relevant to the reader. When a viewer clicks on a link, we get a penny (or nickle, or something).   We also got ready for the arrival of our friend Gautam and Donna from Atlanta tomorrow.

31 May 2006 Wednesday

We went to the Frisco/Silverthorn/Dillion area, just east of the Vail Pass. We got several things done; we picked up a table in Frisco for Ellen for Villa Koransky, we found a copy shop and had more of our “Adventures of T&A” cards printed, and we took a long bike ride around Lake Dillion. Now, I wasn’t really ready for a twenty mile bike ride with a mile and a half of 1,000 ft elevation gain in one monster hill, with traffic, no shoulder for bikes. Not to mention we lost the trail once for about an hour and rode thru two “Closed Trail” signs. 🙂 At the time, he was not my favorite person on the planet. His status has come up a bit, after a soak in the hot tub.

30 May 2006 Tuesday

We did a hike this morning in Cordillera that Ellen suggested, Upper Mirador. The trail was pretty easy, went up several switchbacks and then came down with several switchbacks. At the top we had some very nice views of Cordillera.

29 May 2006 Monday – Memorial Day

We got a update from my sister Dianne in Florida the other day on Simon, our dog. Simon is staying with her and her Goldens while we are traveling. We call her or she calls us very few weeks with an update on how he’s doing and getting along with the other dogs. Well, it seems he’s picked up some bad habits. Dianne takes no responsibility, swears SHE didn’t teach him these things! SHE doesn’t drink from the toilet and SHE doesn’t chew up toilet paper and drag it all over the house. She doesn’t know where he picked up these habits. (wink)

One of the first things we did when we got to Colorado was we had to send off our GPS and camera for service or warranty. I miss our little camera. We haven’t been able to take pictures for the last several days. We have another digital camera, but it’s big and harder to handle, so it’s tough to take it hiking with us.
