There are some fears here that increasing real estate values will make Salida become the next Aspen or Vail, where the workforce can't afford to live in the town they work in. However, there's one major difference... Salida doesn't have a major ski resort nearby, and Monarch Mountain, 30 minutes away, will never be able to become such a resort due to terrain and snowfall limitations. Sure, they get a few skiers, hunters, and snowmobiles, but downtown has a very faint heartbeat in the winter.
The city council is aware of the fact that residents want to see low-cost housing so the workforce can actually live and work in the same town. Let's hope they come through on it. Right now, they claim that other municipalities have to come "on-board" with the low-cost housing concept before they can act. Come on folks. Show some courage and act now!
