FIBArk 2007

That's right.  A new podcast from your favorite T&A.  Teresa and I just experienced our first FIBArk.  I guess we were FIBArk virgins.  So what is FIBArk?  It is one of the world's oldest whitewater festivals (this was the 59th annual FIBArk), featuring plenty of races and judged competitions, live music, etc... It is also Salida's largest festival.  The little town of 5500 turns into a crazy atmosphere featuring 30,000 boaters, party-ers, families, tourists, etc...  What a blast!  We hope you'll like the video we prepared, featuring awesome music by Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk (recorded by CDOD), the hooligan race (anything that floats... except a boat!), raft rodeo, and kayak freestyle.  Enjoy!

Where is the video?  Check enclosure/Attachment(s) links at the bottom of this entry for a video!

FIBArk 2007 was my first also. I had never heard of FIBArk until we saw the signs in Buena Vista. I took 3 of my 4 kids and my daughter-in-law and we stayed in Nathrop for 9 days and another day down at the Sand Dunes.  I call them my kids but they are aged 21 - 26.    We stopped by on Thursday and saw Particle in concert - loved their jam music. That was with two of my daughters.  My son and his wife went back on Friday and saw some more music in between the raindrops.

On Saturday, my daughter Laura and I went back and watched the Hooligan Race, the Tribal Drum and Dance people (wow - I did not expect to enjoy that as much as I did).   Then Ivan Neville and Dumpstaphunk just blew us away, ending with the classic from Sly and the Family Stone was untoppable.   I wish I could remember the name of their song that just rocked (funked?) the crowd into a frenzy.  The guitar player was just amazing.  I expected to see us in the video, but could not make us out, we were in the first row of steps just to the left of center based on your camera view.  I was not the guy in long red pants, I just had blue jeans and a t-shirt, my daughter was wearing her green Habitat for Humanity hoodie. If you remember the older woman with the walker, we were sitting/standing just to the left of her and by the end of the concert a guy that looked like Neil Young from 20 years ago was standing just in front of us.

As luck would have it, we got back to Webster Groves (a suburb of St. Louis) and I was checking out the bands online.  "Particle" was in concert June 30th at Blueberry Hill, which is no further than 15 minutes from my house.  Of course I had to go back and see them again.  Devon Allman (son of Gregg) was also playing in St. Louis on Thursday June 28th.  He plays guitar almost like his uncle and sings like his daddy.  All in all, June was a great month to see live music.

I am getting closer to retirement and trying to decide where to go.  This trip kind of put the general Buena Vista/Salida/Nathrop area at the top of the list. I have always loved Colorado, but the spirit and laid-back attitude of these towns takes me back and gives me freedom.   Besides I also love skiing in the winter.

Thanks for bringing back memories of four weeks ago!
